Town Info
Somerset is a town in Massachusetts with a population size of around 18,165. It is bordered by Swansea (West), Dighton (North), Fall River (East), and Bristol Rhode, Island (South). It was settled in 1677 on the Shawomet lands. It is named after Somerset Square in Boston, and that was named for Somerset in England. It became a major coal port site In 1872. As the industry grew larger in Fall River, it took over most of Somerset’s, thus the town became more suburban. The town population increased during the Great Depression due to people from Fall River and other local areas moving to the suburb. Currently, the town’s major industry is power generation.
