Circa 1905, Cottage: 15 Glover Street
What Makes this House Special?
Let’s begin with Glover Street. With only about 5 or 6 houses, it’s a pretty short street. It runs from Collins St to Austin St.
Even so, you still have the luxury of off-street parking, and a 1-car detached garage. And, you bet, the garage does have electricity, with it’s own circuit breaker panel.
The fenced in yard is a plus, and you can open up the front gate if you need to park additional vehicles or access your detached garage.
So, moving on to one of everyone’s favorite features in a home… the covered front porch. Set out a few chairs, and enjoy those breezy evenings with a glass of wine or start your mornings outside with a fresh cup of coffee. Could this be your favorite hang-out spot too? Read a good book, and enjoy the fresh air.
Let’s move inside!
Be prepared to be amazed the moment you step through that front door. A welcoming open floor concept awaits! The spacious living room and formal dining room have gleaming hardwood floors & tall ceilings, adding to the open and airy feel.
The large eat-in kitchen has ample cabinets and beautiful granite counter tops. All kitchen appliances are included. Although you have a formal dining room, you’ll see that the kitchen is large enough to still have a table there. We think it could be a great idea to maybe add a kitchen island here sometime down the road. You’ll be able to take in all of these rooms, just by standing at the front door. The dining room boasts a stunning staircase too! A half bath rounds out the first level.
The second floor consists of a full tiled bath and three to four bedrooms with hardwood flooring. (the 4th room does not have a closet, and public record only reflects 3 bedrooms here, but if you needed that extra space adding an armoire wouldn’t be a bad idea here!). If not, using this space as an office or, do what the current owner is doing… use it as a big walk-in closet! The master bedroom has recessed lighting and a walk-in closet, the secondary bedrooms are spacious, and the 2nd bathroom is also on this level.
Other things we think you should know
Upgrades include circuit breakers (200 amp panel), replacement windows, (and glass block basement windows), a new water tank and fenced yard.
The detached garage will keep your car clear of snow in the winters, and the driveway has parking for a few cars. Located close to downtown New Bedford, makes this a property you’ll want to put on your list to see!

Who Lived here in the early 1900s?
Ah, this is our favorite part. Few care to do this as part of their marketing process, but SRG just loves, loves, loves doing research going waaaay back on our listings of older homes.
So without further ado, here is what we found on this one:
???? ?? ? ???????, ?????????, ??? ?????? ??????? ??? ???? ?? ???????
The year was 1905, and the local mailman was enjoying his newly constructed home at 15 Glover St.
Walter Whittaker was born in England in 1875 to Richard and Ellen (Butterworth) Whittaker. He was a letter carrier for the US Postal Service and also provided services as a Bass Soloist for Concerts, Lodge Meetings, Entertainments, Weddings, and Funerals.
He and his wife Ruth (Barnes) Whittaker lived in this Cottage from June 1905 through October 1909 with their daughter Doris E. Whittaker. 15 Glover would’ve been Doris’ childhood home from the age of 6 through 10.
Just 2 days shy from Halloween, the Whittakers sold the home to Jerusha R. Cannon who had just lost her eldest son Willie 5 months prior. She lived there with her 2 children, Frank & Marion and also rented to boarders who had immigrated from Ireland and England.
This home served as the Cannon residence from 1909 through 1914.
In 1914, another Englishman, Thomas Sheard purchased the property. He was a Conductor, Policeman and later a Boat Builder, and called this place home from 1914 to 1917. He lived there with his wife Agnes before moving to 30 Potter St in New Bedford.
In 1917, it was sold to Thomas Seddon, yet another fine Englishman, who was also a Police Officer for the City. He lived there with his wife Alice and his 3 daughters. This home stayed in the Seddon family for several decades later…
Alas, this is where our story ends, as we like to protect the privacy of prior occupants who are still living. We will be happy to share the rest of our research with the new buyers.
