The Captain James Allen House

Captain James Allen made the pivot from Whaling Captain, to Farmer around 1851. After 20 years of service in the whaling industry, he was ready to retire and settle down in Acushnet to start a farm.

By then, he had been married to his 2nd wife Eliza Anne (White) for 5 years. Eliza was the daughter of Ansel White.  She was deeded an 1+ acre parcel of land on Long Plain, and Capt. Allen set to building the beautiful 2 1/2 story Greek Revival that now majestically sits at the corner of Lake and Main Street, now known and numbered 1239 Main St. Acushnet, MA.

“The most impressive house in the Long Plain area”

Presenting 1239 Main St. Acushnet, MA

The 3,591 sq ft home, sits back from the road on its granite-block foundation on an approximate 1.06 acre lot. Many will admire the full-width, 3-bay porch with Doric columns, and the 6-over-9 windows on the 1st floor of the facade, and 6-over-6 windows on the 2nd and 3rd stories. There is a similar 2nd porch with Mahogany deck to enjoy on the south side.

The property adds a truly unique experience, being a 2-family residence (a rarity in Acushnet), with 2 driveways. (One is accessible through Main Street, and the other through Lake Street).

The rear of the property, which was once the Barn, has most recently been used as a daycare/office. There is a also an attached garage. Continuing through to the fenced area in the rear, offers a private space with a pool (new liner and pump) and a wonderful yard to enjoy.

Overall, this home offers a unique opportunity to not only own a piece of history, but enjoy the benefits of a potential in-home business, and income from a 2nd unit upstairs.
